The Desire to Look Better

»

Aren't you sometimes unhappy with the results of your driver's license or passport photos? You think you should look better than how it turned out. Why is that?

It may be due to the fact that when you look into the mirror, you instantly make your facial expression and angle to be the way you like, which you would make you think that is how you look, but the reality is somewhat different. Everyone wants to look better than in the reality. Everyone wants to look good in front of others. It that their ego? I think it comes from somewhat of more rational reason.

As described in my former essay, people are haunted by the first person concept. Animals are the same. We cannot get rid of wants because we need to sustain our lives and satisfy our needs. The first person is a strong drive. However, you can observe from even dogs and cats, that we do care about and rely on others. We all are charmed with the concept of overcoming the first person, and feel the togetherness and connection with others.

So let's take it this way. If you happen to see a person who doesn't care about looking good, and resulting in looking unkempt, or even being dirty, you probably wouldn't want to be around them. Don't you feel the danger of being dragged over to that side? You are missing opportunities to overcome the first person barriers around you. That is how you become unconsciously desiring to look better.

I conclude that desiring to look better, is not a result of your ego, but mostly from your programmed intuition. It is the eagerness to be with others, feeling the togetherness and connection.
