パンドラの函をあけてみた

　きょう夕方にアップした記事「好みの曲だけを流すPandoraが検索機能追加」を書くために、この新機能を試してみたのですが、これがおもしろい。

　Pandoraというのは、楽曲の属性をデータベース化しておき、傾向が似ている曲をどんどんストリーミングしてくれる、自分専用のラジオ曲を作れるサービスです。これは、米国以外ではサービスしていないのですが、IP制限をかけるほどのきびしさではなく、お試しするくらいならば可能。

　で、本日加わったのが、楽曲やアーティストを検索して、楽曲の「属性」を知ることができる、Backstageという機能なのです。

　たとえば、Queenの“Bohemian Rhapsody”：

demanding vocal performances
mild rhythmic syncopation
heavy use of vocal harmonies
a prominent rhythm piano part
call and answer vocal harmony (Antiphony)
demanding instrumental part writing
meandering melodic phrasing
mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation
paired vocal harmony
a clear focus on recording studio production
major key tonality
melodic songwriting
a dirty electric guitar solo
an emotional male lead vocal performance
intricate arranging

という属性が与えられていることがわかります。“a clear focus on recording studio production ”というのは、“A Day In The Life”や“Bridge Over Troubled Water”にも与えられており、いわゆる凝りに凝った、エンジニアリングがほどこされたレコーディングの作品であることがわかります。

　“call and answer vocal harmony (Antiphony)”というのは、例の「ガリレオ、ガリレオ、マグニフィコ〜〜」のところですね。

　といったふうに、ミュージシャンの楽屋裏に行った雰囲気を味わえます。

　本日オルタナティブ・ブロガーに加わった藤巻さんのブログタイトルである“Here, There and Everywhere”（ぼくも大好きな曲です）は、

major key tonality
melodic songwriting

という属性です。“meandering melodic phrasing”あたりが一番の特徴ですかね。似た曲には「ニューヨーク炭坑の悲劇」「ミセス・ブラウンのお嬢さん」あたりがあげられています。

　ちなみにこの曲が入ったRevolverは今年で40周年なのですね……。

　歌詞も調べているのです。例えばNeil Youngの“Heart Of Gold”は“great lyrics”ですって。
