ワンガリ・マータイ女史の訃報に接して

車に乗っていつものようにNPRをつけると、ある女性の力強い声が聴こえてきた。

"When you think of all the conflicts we have - whether those conflicts are local, whether they are regional or global - these conflicts are aften over the management, the distribution of resources.  If these resources are very valuable, if these resources are scarce, if these resources are degraded, there is going to be competition.  And it is over that competition that we get conflict."

（紛争はすべからく - それが地域的かあるいは国際間かに関わらず - 資源の配分および管理に関するものなのです。その資源が貴重でかつ稀少であり、 それが脅かされれば、そこに競争が生まれます。その競争が紛争につながるのです。）

ああ、この人が、アフリカ人女性で初めてノーベル平和賞を受賞した人か。

家に帰って来てウィキペディアで検索し、日本語の「もったいない」を海外に広めた人だとも知った。

今日、71歳でがんのため亡くなったという。合掌。
